In dieser Arbeit analysiere ich zehn Bilder aus der Serie Hyakuirobanashi die in der Edo-Zeit (1603-1868) in Japan entstanden sind. Im Eigentlichen sind die Bilder Karikaturen, deren Texte, die moralischen und ethnischen Vorstellungen der Bürger ansprechen, sich darüber lustig machen, oder sie den Bürgern wieder ins Bewusstsein zu rufen. Die Bilder als solche sind dem Text enthobene Szenen, deren Details oftmals auf die Theaterszene (Kabuki, Rakugo, No) hinweisen. Die Themen sind gesellschaftsbezogen, die Sprache jedoch verwoben durch Wortspiele und Symbolismen. Mein Ziel war, herauszufinden eben welchen Zweck diese Serie verfolgte: war es ein rein kommerzialer, oder wollten die Künstler doch nur moralische Fauxpas aufzeigen, oder gar beides?

This paper is dealing with the analysis of ten pictures of the series Hyakuirobanashi (Hundred different stories) of the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. The pictures are caricatures and have a text passage – a story – written on each of them. Those stories were all written by Mantei Ōga. I solely confined myself to the translation and interpretation of the stories, since my goal in this work is to figure out what kind of purpose those pictures had for the people of Edo. Where they just mere entertainment or did they serve other purposes as well? The stories as well as the pictures show various aspects of social behaviour and allows us a glimpse of understanding of ancient Edo society. The pictures can be seen as a scene, drawn out of the stories. They give us an insight into the life of Edo and they shall also procure morals for people who went astray, or simply to entertain and mock certain aspects of society.
