Abstract (eng)
This thesis represents an empirical work about cohesion and simultaneous
interpretation.
After a general introduction to the linguistic concept of cohesion and the main
cohesive ties, the focus will be set on the difference between text and context in
simultaneous interpretation and the importance of text typologies for simultaneous
interpreters. Recognizing text typology of the source text plays a relevant role for the
target text production, as text typology and text genre transmit a lot of relevant
information which can help interpreters to activate particular schemes and frames.
Within the appellative text typology, the attention is drawn to political
speeches whose text function is the political propaganda. Political speeches are
presented as an own text genre with its particular features and language peculiarities.
An attempt to describe cohesion and cohesive ties within political speeches is made.
As the corpus texts of this study represent political speeches made in the
European Parliament, the hypertext of plenary debates in general and in this
European Institution is enlightened.
For the observation of cohesion political speeches in German and their Italian
and Spanish interpretations were transcripted and analysed.
Referring to Shlesinger's study (1995), 4 cohesive ties, reference, substitution
& ellipses, conjunction and lexical cohesion, were detected in the source texts and
their translation was observed in the target texts.
The analysis shows that shifts of cohesion at each above mentioned level
(reference, substitution & ellipses, conjunction and lexical cohesion) are intrinsic to
simultaneous interpretation but they are not to be equated with shifts of meaning or
content in the target text.
