Die gegenständliche Arbeit befasst sich mit der Verarbeitung des Thyestischen Mahles in den
Theaterstücken von Seneca („Thystes“), Shakespeare („Titus Andronicus“) und Hauptmann
(„Veland“).
Nach der für die Arbeit als Voraussetzung zu sehende Beschäftigung mit Ovids Mythos über
Procne, Philomela und Tereus, wird das Thyestische Mahl zeitlich vor Seneca betrachtet. Im
Anschluss daran werden die drei genannten Stücke einzeln mit einem Augenmerk auf das
Thyestische Mahl ausführlich analysiert und interpretiert: Vorlagen und Einflüsse, Handlung,
Untersuchung der Dramaturgie und Struktur des jeweiligen Werkes in Bezug auf das
Thyestische Mahl, die textliche sowie symbolische und metaphorische Hinführung auf das
Mahl, die Schlachtung der Söhne, die Zubereitung des Mahls, das Bankett als solches sowie
die Betrachtung der wichtigen Personen des Stückes wie des Wirten bzw. Kochs, Gastes
sowie der Speise.

This thesis focuses on the occurrence of the Thyestic Meal in the plays of Seneca („Thystes“),
Shakespeare („Titus Andronicus“) and Hauptmann („Veland“).
The first part deals with the myth of Procne, Tereus and Philomela from Ovids
Metamorphoses, which is to be seen as a precondition for the understanding of the subsequent
chapters, followed by looking into the Thyestic Meal before Seneca. The next part consists of
both the detailed analysis and interpretation of the above mentioned plays: guidelines and
influences, plot, analysis of the dramaturgy as well as of the structure of the plays in regard of
the Thyestic Meal, the textual, symbolic and metaphoric allusions in regard of the meal, the
slaughtering of the sons, the preparation of the meal, the banquet itself as well as the analysis
of the play’s important characters such as the host/cook, the guest and the food.
