Abstract (eng)
The MA-thesis at hand can be considered one of the first academic attempts to introduce the oeuvre of Tanika Gupta, a contemporary British playwright. The dramatist has a Bengali background, but was born in Britain, which is why it is very important to her not to be classified as an Asian playwright. Mostly she deals with intercultural topics such as multiculturalism, domestic violence, gender issuses, youth identities, race, ethnicity and coming to terms with one's roots.
Her works are so fascinating, because they are not based on the well-known (post-)colonial dichotomy of us vs. them. On the contrary, in her works London is presented as a "diaspora space" (Avtar Brah), in which multiculturalism is lived on a daily basis, including intercultural friendships as well as brutal ethnic and racial clashes.
