Diese Doktorarbeit ist die erste detaillierte Studie über den neuassyrischen Palasthaushalt. Da der königliche Haushalt sowohl Privathaushalt des Königs als auch das politische und administrative Reichszentrum war, trägt diese Arbeit zu einem besseren Verständnis nicht nur des neuassyrischen Haushalts des Königs, sondern auch des Regierungsapparates bei. Die Studie untersucht die Funktionen sowie die Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen des Haushaltspersonals. Sie erläutert welche Beamte, Fachkräfte und Angestellte innerhalb oder im Auftrag des königlichen Haushalts tätig waren. Was waren ihre Aufgaben? Wie waren sie im königlichen Haushalt positioniert und in welcher Beziehung standen sie zum König (und dessen Familie)? Welche Abteilungen gab es und wer leitete diese? Welche Rolle spielte das niederrangige Personal in diesem Gefüge? Mit dem Ziel die Interaktion zwischen den verschiedenen Haushaltsmitgliedern zu klären, untersucht diese Studie ferner deren hierarchische Einordnung und die institutionellen Abgrenzungen. Sie ergründet den sozialen und kulturellen Hintergrund des Personals sowie dessen Arbeitsleben, einschließlich seiner finanziellen Mittel, Menge und Art der Vergütung (der geleisteten Arbeit) und seines beruflichen Werdegangs. Die Basis dieser Arbeit bildet eine umfassende Sammlung von Belegstellen zu Beamten, Berufstätigen und anderen Haushaltsmitgliedern in den neuassyrischen Quellen, die insbesondere Alltagstexte (Rechtsurkunden, Verwaltungstexte, Briefe) aber auch literarischen Texte und lexikalische Listen mit einschließen. Basierend auf einer eingehenden Analyse der einzelnen Ämter und Berufe, präsentiere ich anschließend eine Rekonstruktion der Organisation des neuassyrischen königlichen Haushalts. Zudem biete ich eine synthetische Abhandlung über die wichtigsten Aspekte des neuassyrischen Beamtentums, wobei auch das Ausmaß einer rationalen (anstelle einer patrimonialen) Natur dieses Beamtentums diskutiert wird.

This thesis is the first detailed study devoted to the Neo-Assyrian royal household. The topic is particularly important because the royal household was both the personal household of the sovereign and the administrative and political centre of the empire, hence its study helps us to gain not only a better understanding of the royal household itself, but also of the governmental apparatus. This work addresses the functions as well as the conditions of life and work of the household personnel. It clarifies which types of officials, professionals and other employees were active within or on behalf of the royal household. What were their tasks, and what was their position within the royal household and in relation to the king (and his family)? What departments were in place, and who were the managers? What was the role of lower-ranking personnel within this system? The study also investigates administrative hierarchies and departmental boundaries with the aim of elucidating the interaction between different household members. It investigates the social and cultural background of the personnel as well as their professional life, including their financial means, the quantity and type of their remuneration, and their career progression. The research is based on the comprehensive collection of references to officials, professionals and other household members in the cuneiform sources, which consist mainly of everyday documents (legal documents, administrative records, letters) but also of literary texts and lexical lists. Based on the detailed evaluation of individual offices and professions, I then present a reconstruction of the organisation of the Neo-Assyrian royal household. In addition, I offer a synthetic treatment of key aspects of Neo-Assyrian officialdom, discussing in Weberian terms the extent to which it was rational (rather than patrimonial) in nature.
