Abstract (eng)
The central question of this master thesis is: "Is dialect and standard language in linguistically heterogeneous primary school classes in Northern Burgenland used by teachers and students during school routine?”. The theoretical part of this master thesis deals with the linguistic landscape of German in Austria: German as a pluricentric language and dialect regions in Austria are described in detail. In detail, the main focus lies on the dialect used in Northern Burgenland, since the scientific analysis is conducted in this region. Furthermore, the theoretical part includes a critical breakdown of differential exposure to German dialect (speakers) in Austria, where group-specific features and possible discrimination were analyzed. In addition, a description of elementary schools in Austria including an explanation of the use of dialect in the classroom with children who speak German as a first language and children with German as a second language is incorporated. Based on the theoretical part, the empirical part uses guided interviews and classroom observations to find out how teachers and pupils in linguistically heterogeneous primary school classes in district Neusiedl am See, Northern part of Burgenland, use standard language and dialect. The teaching situation in 2014/15 in linguistically heterogeneous primary school classes in district Neusiedl am See are be documented as well.
