La Mère coupable, die schuldige Mutter, spricht von früheren Fehltritten, die nun, zwanzig Jahre später, drohen, eine Familie zu zerstören. Schuldig dafür hält sich einzig und allein Rosine, die Frau des Grafen und Mutter von zwei Söhnen. Sie akzeptiert das außereheliche Kind ihres Mannes, das als Mündel bei ihnen im Haus lebt – Sie kann sich dabei aber gleichsam sicher sein, dass das von ihr gezeugte außereheliche Kind niemals akzeptiert werden würde.
L´autre Tartuffe ou La Mère coupable ist der dritte Teil von Beaumarchais Figaro-Trilogie und zeigt, wie die Familie Almaviva, gemeinsam mit Figaro und dem Tartuffe Bégearss, versucht, sich im Paris des späten 18. Jahrhunderts zu integrieren.
In meiner Diplomarbeit untersuche ich anhand eines sprach- und textwissenschaftlichen Analyseverfahrens von Metzeltin und Thir (2012) die Figuren von Beaumarchais Drama und ihre Beziehungen zueinander. Ich versuche das Bild wiederzugeben, das der Autor von der Pariser Gesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts zeichnet. Dieses Bild vergleiche ich mit den geschichtlichen Hintergründen jener Zeit und der Biographie Beaumarchais. Dabei fokussiere ich die politischen Vorgänge (die Ablösung des Ancien Régime durch die Révolution française), sowie die Situation der Frau und die Bedeutung von Ehebruch, Schuldverständnis, Ehre, Tugendhaftigkeit und Jungfräulichkeit.

La Mère coupable, the guilty mother, is a play about a past indiscretion that now, twenty years later, threatens to destroy a family. Rosine, the wife of the Count and mother of two sons, considers herself to be the only one responsible for the tragedy. She accepts the illegitimate child of the Count, who lives as a ward with the family. At the same time, the Countess is certain that the child she bore outside of marriage will never be accepted.
Beaumarchais’s L´autre Tartuffe ou La Mère coupable is the third part of the Figaro trilogy. The drama portrays the Almaviva family (Count, Countess, Figaro, Suzanne, Bégearss, Léon and Florestine), and their attempt to establish themselves in Paris in the late 18th century.
In the first part of my thesis, I examine the characters of this drama and their relationships to each other by employing Metzeltin and Thir's linguistic method of analysis (2012). Then I attempt to depict Beaumarchais portrayal of 18th century Parisian society, which I afterwards compare with the historical background and the biography of Beaumarchais. Finally, I focus on particular political incidents (like the replacement of the Ancien Régime by the French Revolution), as well as the situation of women and the significance of adultery, guilt, honor, virtue and virginity in their lives.
