Institutsgründer Heinz Kindermann (1894-1985) begann 1943 mit der Einrichtung eines theaterwissenschaftlichen Forschungsapparates am Zentralinstitut für Theaterwissenschaft der Universität Wien. Seine Vision war es, in kürzester Zeit ein Forschungsinstitut aufzubauen und dessen Bestände und Sammlungen möglichst breitenwirksam zu kommunizieren. Seine Intention war es, die führende Position des Zentralinstitutes und seiner Person in einer nationalsozialistischen Theaterwissenschaft zu etablieren. Der theaterwissenschaftliche Forschungs- und Studienapparat bestand aus einer Fachbibliothek, Archiven und Sammlungen an deren Aufbau parallel gearbeitet und deren Umfang je nach Bestand sehr unterschiedlich angelegt wurde. Der Aufbau hatte in den ersten Jahren nach der Institutsgründung Priorität und wurde mit den entsprechenden Mitteln vorangetrieben, um Forschung und Studium möglichst rasch mit entsprechender Literatur und Material zu versorgen. Die ausgewertete Dokumentation zu den Beständen macht die Struktur und Ordnung des wissenschaftlichen Forschungsapparates, so wie ihn Kindermann damals für die Theaterwissenschaft vorgesehen hatte, nachvollziehbar. Neben Kindermann sind Joseph Gregor (1888-1960), Leiter der Theatersammlung der Nationalbibliothek in Wien von 1922-1954 und Carl Niessen (1890-1969), Begründer der Theaterwissenschaftlichen Sammlung an der Universität zu Köln, für die Ausrichtung der Sammlung von Bedeutung gewesen. Die chronologische Ordnung der Sammlungen und ihre Dokumentation beschreiben gleichzeitig ihre Entstehungsgeschichte. Relationen zu anderen Theatersammlungen im deutschsprachigen Raum wurden auf ihren potentiellen Einfluss auf Sammlungsaufbau und die Beschaffungspolitik untersucht. Die historiografische Aufarbeitung der Materialien zur Sammlungsgeschichte soll zur Vervollständigung der Fach- und Bibliotheksgeschichte des Institutes für Theater-, Film und Medienwissenschaft der Universität Wien beitragen.

In 1943 the founder of the Institute, Heinz Kindermann (1894-1985) started to establish a collection of materials in the field of Theatre Studies at the Central Institute of Theatre Studies of the University of Vienna. His vision was to build up a research institute as quickly as possible and to make its materials and collections known to a large audience. He was driven by the ambition to secure the leading role of the Central Institute and his person in National Socialist Theatre Studies. The collection of research and study materials consisted of a library, archives and special collections, wich were built up simultaneously and which greatly varied in size. In the first years following the foundation of the institute, the establishment of the collection had absolute priority and correspondingly, the necessary funds were allocated to it in order to provide adequate resources to scientists and students. The documentation on the establishment of the collection examined in this thesis shows the original organisation and structure of the collection intended by Kindermann. Apart from Kindermann, Joseph Gregor (1888-1960), Director of the Theatre Collection of the National Library in Vienna from 1922-1954 and Carl Niessen (1890-1969), founder of the Collection of Theatre Studies at the University of Cologne had an important influence on the orientation of the collection. The chronological order of the collections and other documents and records referring to it also illustrate the history of the establishment of the collection. It was also examined how relations with other theatre collections in German-speaking countries had a potential influence on the gathering of materials and acquisition policies. The review of the documentation on the history of the collection of materials is intended as a contribution to more completely recording the history of the Institute and the Library of Theatre, Film and Media Studies of the University of Vienna.
