Die Darstellung des Hl. Hieronymus als Übersetzer in der Malerei

In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wird die Analyse malerisch-künstlerischer Darstellungen als neue Möglichkeit, neben den bisher rein sprachlich-textlichen Ansätzen, innerhalb den Übersetzungswissenschaften betrachtet, um einen Zugang zu einer übersetzenden Person zu erhalten. Die Intention dieser Arbeit ist es, die Analyse (fiktiver) übersetzender Personen als jungen Forschungszweig – Translator Studies genannt – zu fördern und die Person des Hl. Hieronymus als Übersetzer der Bibel und Patron aller ÜbersetzerInnen als Forschungsobjekt innerhalb der Übersetzungswissenschaften voranzutreiben.
Um dem Forschungsinteresse nachzugehen, ist eine neuartige interdisziplinäre Herangehensweise nötig, nämlich eine Kombination aus Übersetzungswissenschaften und Kunstgeschichte. Die Translator Studies werden deshalb mit der Bildtheorie von Oliver R. Scholz (²2004) in Verbindung gebracht. Da der Bildinhalt auch durch Details, wie Mimik und Gestik der dargestellten Person, sowie umgebende Gegenstände und Bildausschnitt vermittelt wird, ist es notwendig, den bildtheoretischen Rahmen durch Aspekte der Comic-, Film- und Fernsehanalyse zu erweitern. Für ein holistisches Gesamtverständnis aller Aspekte einer Analyse malerischer Darstellungen, muss außerdem das Verhältnis von Bild und Text mitein-bezogen werden, da Bilder meist mit Begleittexten ausgestattet werden.
Daraus schließend werden die malerischen Darstellungen des Hl. Hieronymus als Übersetzer beschrieben und mit Hieronymusdarstellungen als Schriftgelehrter vergleichend analysiert, um Attribute und Charakteristika seiner übersetzerischen Tätigkeit herauszuarbeiten und thematisch einzuteilen. Der zeitliche Rahmen beschränkt sich dabei auf den Zeitraum vom 15. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert und fokussiert auf geographischer Ebene die Länder Italien und die heutigen Niederlande. Dadurch wird ein beispielhafter Vergleich möglich, der Aufschluss über die Andersartigkeit der übersetzerischen Darstellungen des Hl. Hieronymus aufgrund religiöser und geographischer Unterschiede gibt.

This master’s thesis considers the analysis of pictorial, artistic representations as a new approach in translation studies, allowing us to conduct research on translators using methods other than purely linguistic and textual ones used so far. In doing so, this thesis aims to advance the analysis of (fictional) translators within a new line of research – called translator studies – and to promote the person of Saint Jerome – translator of the Bible and patron saint of all translators – as an object of research in translation studies.
To pursue this research interest, this thesis applies a new, interdisciplinary approach, combining the fields of translation studies and art history. More specifically, this research approaches the field of translator studies using the image theory of Oliver R. Scholz (²2004). However, since the content of an image is also conveyed by details such as the facial expressions and gestures of the person depicted as well as by surrounding objects and image detail, we need to expand the framework of image theory by including aspects of comic and film analysis. For a holistic understanding of all aspects of pictorial representations, we moreover need to consider the relation between image and text, as images are, in many cases, accompanied by texts.
Based on the above, this thesis sets out to explore and compare pictorial representations of Saint Jerome in which he is shown as a translator with representations in which he is depicted as a scribe to shed light on, and thematically classify, the attributes and characteristics describing his translation work. The representations under review date back to the period ranging from the 15th to the 17th century and were crafted by painters from Italy and the present-day Netherlands. This temporal and geographical context allows for exemplary comparisons, providing information about the broad range of depictions of Saint Jerome as a translator while taking into account both religious and geographical differences at the time.
