Abstract (eng)
This master’s thesis demonstrates the potentials of using daily newspaper coverage about Austria’s 2022 presidential election for upper secondary history and political science education. The hermeneutic based methodology used for this paper focuses on recent trends. The first part of this paper will analyze the role of the president in Austria’s political system. Then, print media in the form of the daily newspapers will be discussed in the context of the Second Austrian Republic. On the basis of this discussion, the didactical discourse of the use of daily news- papers in teaching history and political science will be analyzed. This discussion will also take the Austrian curriculum for history and political science in upper secondary education into ac- count. Afterwards, this paper’s research question, How can history and political science lessons in upper secondary education (AHS) utilize selected daily newspaper coverage in contexts of teaching about Austria’s 2022 presidential election?, will be discussed by presenting five lesson plans which all use coverage of daily newspapers to teach about Austria's 2022 presidential election. In addition to this, didactic comments will be presented for each lesson plan, also observing possible interdisciplinary aspects. The presented lesson plans illustrate that using daily newspapers to teach about Austria’s 2022 presidential election can result in a multifaceted, comprehensive, and methodologically diverse learning experience for history and political science in upper secondary education. Furthermore, it shows the potentials of incorporating daily newspapers in history and political science education.
