Title (eng)
Resounding the Buddha's Sutras
Film director
Description (eng)
In Tibetan societies, written artefacts that carry the teachings of the Buddha enjoy an elevated status. As a material representation of the Buddha's speech, they are not only treasured for their textual contents, but they also transmit protective and beneficial blessings. These forces are invoked in public rituals in which Buddhist manuscripts are paraded around a village or their texts are recited to ensure the well-being of the community. This film documents a public reading of sūtra volumes in Dolpo, a remote and structurally weak area in the Himalayan borderlands between Nepal and Tibet. By giving voice to local stakeholders of Buddhist manuscript collections, it sheds light on the social life of written artefacts. The film is produced by the Tibetan Manuscript Project Vienna (TMPV), a long-term research initiative dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and research of Tibetan Buddhist canonical manuscript collections.
