Abstract: This talk discusses the problem of proving the positive energy theorem in cases not directly covered by the Dirac operator approach or the minimal hypersurface approach. These are the cases when the dimension is greater than 8 and the manifold is not spin. The proof is accomplished by extending the minimal hypersurface approach in the presence of singularities and controlling the singular sets which arise. The work is in a recent paper which is joint with S. T. Yau.
