Abstract (eng)
The author of the present dissertation examines the element of the marvellous in the political poems of the late antique poet Claudius Claudianus. He gives a full discussion not only of all passages, in which the poet’s narration transcends reality, but also of all the literary motives touching the numinous (for example ascension of human beings to heaven, establishment of a mythical Golden Age, divine ancestry of human beings, the interaction between gods or between gods and humans, etc.).
Claudian’s political poems are interpreted as a special form of continuation and combination of traditional elements taken both from panegyric and epic literature. It is examined, how different elements of the marvellous are rooted in these literary traditions, and how they are used and given a new shape by the poet in his political works.
It is demonstrated that the late antique poet has functionalized literary elements, which are for the most part traditional, in order to achieve two aims: On the one hand, he wanted his literary works to be accepted and appreciated as legitimate continuation of old epic tradition by his contemporary audience; on the other hand, he wanted to exalt the contemporary mighty, who are in the center of his panegyric, as articulately as possible.
