Abstract (eng)
The present thesis tries to better illuminate the Bavarian regional history of the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria during the 6th, 7th an 8th century A. D. against the supraregional backdrop of the Bavarian stem duchy and Central Europe. Because of the typical lack of contemporary literary sources, insights from toponymy and archeology are used extensively.
The thesis traces the arc from the Bavarian ethnogenesis and its prerequisites during the Migration Period, past the rise and pinnacle of power of the Agilolfingan dukes, to the fall of the de facto independent Bavarian stem duchy and its integration into the Carolingian Empire. The regional backlink to Upper Austria itself is mainained through a critical and detailed examination of literary, archeological and toponymal sources.
