Abstract (eng)
The main objective of this thesis is the analysis of Austrian and Hungarian toys around 1900. Informations about toys of the Danube Monarchy, produced around the turn of the century, are scarcely available and can be found only in some publications. Small works of art were often merely mentioned and not analysed thouroughly. In this thesis, information and sources were collected, to create a complex image, and subsequently, to establish a genre and topic related catalogue. On account of the scarce sources, it is not possible to cover all artists and toys in this catalogue.
The first ample part dedicates itself to the gahtering of the available arts of work. Thereafter, the second part investigates the gathered collection. If within the complete artistic works of an artist, it is not possible to draw paralells between a toy and his other works of art, in this case examples are provided of other toys produced around 1900.
My research is based mainly on former arts and crafts professional magazines, catalogues and artists monographs. Moreover, I was able to contact various museums, galleries, arts dealers and art collectors, who provided the possibility to see some of the original arts of work. Furthermore, auctions and auction houses were examined as well, since toys of the time around 1900 are constantly reappearing at these places. This thesis is focused mainly on the history of art, however, historic, sociologic and educational aspects were not disregarded.
