Abstract (eng)
The profession of translators has fundamentally changed in the age of information technology. It has become essential to know and to master any software accelerating the tasks of the translation process in order to stay on the market. For technical translators, this not only involves text processing programs and electronic tools like CD-ROM or internet-based dictionaries, but also computer-assisted translation and CAT tools.
Apart from a text editor (translation environment), most common CAT tools include a translation memory and a terminology management system. CAT tools are not only speeding up the translation process, but are also facilitating it considerably, provided that they are used properly.
The aim of this master thesis is to describe the basic elements of the CAT tools SDL Trados 2007 and memoQ, and to compare both with regard to their functionality, whereas the practical aspect will be its major focus. Both programs are well known on the translation market. Based on the results of this comparison, the answer to the following questions will be answered: How much and in what sense do both CAT tools differ? What purpose is every program best suitable for?
The first chapters will deal with the translation in the age of information technology, the classifications of electronic tools and their impact on the translation process. Then, the concept of CAT tools will be defined and its basic elements explained. In the next chapters, the programs SDL Trados 2007 and memoQ will be outlined to be contrasted in tabular form in the last chapter.
