Abstract (eng)
This present paper is a thesis on the major of spatial planning and regional research at the Institute of Geography and Regional Studies, University of Vienna.
Against the backdrop of economic structural changes due to globalization, the political transformation process in the former Eastern bloc countries and ongoing European integration, the two metropolitan regions of Hamburg and Vienna find themselves again in a new competitive location of city regions in the last two decades.
Using the examples of Hamburg and Vienna it will be shown how European cities, in terms of regional co-operation, respond to changes in general conditions.
The topic was discussed with the aid of technical literature and planning documents as well as using insights from expert interviews.
After the theoretical part, which deals with the basics of spatial planning in Germany and Austria, the city-region concepts and an outline of (regional) cooperation, a description will follow of regional co-operation in both metropolitan areas. The paper ends with a comparison.
