Abstract (eng)
The topic of this thesis is the study period of the Viennese-born writer Hilde Spiel. Spiel studied from 1930 to 1936 philosophy and psychology at the University of Vienna. Her most influential teachers were Moritz Schlick, Charlotte Bühler and Karl Bühler. A very productive environment characterized by discussion and critique was established around these academics. From 1933/34 onwards growing restrictions by the Austrofascist system were noticeable. In 1936 Hilde Spiel, aged only twenty-five, finally decided to leave Austria. At that time she had already written three novels and around forty short stories, had published as a journalist in various newspapers and magazines and had worked for the "Wirtschaftspsychologische Forschungsstelle” – an institution for empirical social research and market research, founded by Paul Felix Lazarsfeld. The title of Hilde Spiel’s dissertation on film theory was „Versuch einer Darstellungstheorie des Films“.
This text gives a survey of her writings (published as well as unpublished) and other occupations in the years 1930 to 1936 and tries to answer the questions: What impact did Spiel’s studies have on her work? Which interdependencies can be found between her studies, her work?
The existing extensive academic literature on Hilde Spiel has paid little attention to her study period, focusing mostly on her early novels. Or this reason, the research is in large parts based on primary sources.
The thesis comprises five main chapters: The first is about Spiel’s dissertation. An analysis of her private and work-related surroundings shows numerous relevant contacts concerning her preoccupation with film. The theoretical and institutional framework of the „Institut für Psychologie“, and the context of works of Karl Bühler as well as of other academics and students is examined. Spiel’s dissertation was part of a film project that had been implemented at the Department of Psychology by Karl Bühler and his assistant Käthe Wolf.
In the second chapter of this thesis the influence of Moritz Schlick on Hilde Spiel is analyzed. He had an essential impact on her further development. After his assassination in 1936 Spiel left Austria.
The results of the research on Hilde Spiel‘s work for the „Wirtschaftspsychologische Forschungsstelle“ are to be found in the third chapter: The questions of when she actually worked for this institution and what were her duties are examined.
In the two following parts the novels and articles written by Spiel before 1936 are summarized and contextualized with her other occupations: The influence of Charlotte Bühler’s writings, especially on the novel Kati auf der Brücke, can be shown. The novel Sonderzug was never published, probably because of the numerous political statements in the text.
Finally, the presentation of some of Hilde Spiel’s journalistic works also shows thematic relations within the oeuvre of the writer’s early years.
