Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht koloniale und lokale Vorstellungen von Öffentlichkeit in Nigeria 1920-1943. Durch eine Analyse kolonialer Akten und Berichterstattung in englischsprachigen, nigerianischen Zeitungen nähert sie sich der Kommunikationssphäre, in der Herausforderungen kolonialer Herrschaft artikuliert wurden, an. Ausgehend von sogenannten „diagnostischen Ereignissen“ – markanten Kulminationspunkten politischer Auseinandersetzungen in Lagos – untersucht die Arbeit die Rolle, die öffentlicher Kritik im kolonialen Staat zugeschrieben wurde, betrachtet Struktur und Mechanismen der kolonialen Öffentlichkeit und analysiert von NigerianerInnen geäußerte Vorstellungen von öffentlicher Meinung. Dieser Blick auf publizistische Aktivität im kolonialen Staat ermöglicht es, einen Einblick in Strukturen und Herausforderungen kolonialer Macht zu gewinnen und Schlüsse zu kolonialer Hegemonie, den Medien und Öffentlichkeit im kolonialen Nigeria zu ziehen. So soll die Bedeutung von Zeitungen für den nigerianischen Nationalismus beleuchtet werden.

The study at hand investigates the colonial public sphere in Nigeria, 1920-1943, through a close reading of colonial archival records and the Lagosian press. It turns to imaginations of the arena of public communication and to utterances which potentially aimed to alter or contest colonial governance. Starting with “diagnostic events” that strikingly reveal political contests and conflicts in Lagos, it examines the role of public criticism in the colonial state, the structure and mechanisms of the public sphere, and African conceptions of public opinion. Looking into the broader context of print culture under colonial hegemony, the study’s objective is to map power structures and contestations of colonial power and to draw conclusions about colonial hegemony, the media, and the public sphere. Therefore, it seeks to provide a better understanding of the importance of public media, in particular newspapers, for Nigerian nationalism.
