Abstract (eng)
In this diploma thesis in theater, film and media studies, it is to be dealt with the question of how Vietnam War discourse in American film has changed over time, the Vietnam War discourse in American film - this based on five movie examples. The five films are also standing for forty years Vietnam War movie history, they are "The Green Berets" from 1968, "The Deer Hunter" from 1978, "Born on the Fourth of July" from 1989, "Tigerland" from 2000 and "Tropic Thunder" from the year 2008. So how can over the decades the image of a war change and subsequently, how does the picture changes about films about just this war? This is the underly-ing lead question of this thesis. An analysis of the Vietnam War discourses in the U.S. feature films means that at first an initial differentiation of the subgenre Viet-nam War film with the film genre of the war film has to be taken, the two concepts are introduced and defined (as there is also a differentiation of different forms of Vietnam War films). Furthermore, it is in order to generate an understanding of the Vietnam War discourses necessary, to provide a historical outline of the Vietnam War and also to deal with the perception of the Vietnam War in the United States. Thereafter, the focus will be on American feature films about the Vietnam War, giving an introduction into the relationship between war and cinema in the United States, central and recurring tropes in the Vietnam War films as well as the stages of the Vietnam War films in more detail. Based on this imparted knowledge, the five feature film examples are subsequently analyzed.
