Abstract (eng)
Machinima is a new kind of medium, which is currently rising from a subculture to a mass medium, while its potential as well as its different fields of application are still evolving.
This thesis deals with the relatively young medium Machinima. It focuses on three topics: its history, its techniques, and its different genres.
The first part of this thesis emphasises on the history of the development of the medium Machinima. The term Machinima will be defined, explaining the roots of this new kind of medium. Furthermore, the definition for Machinima will be explained, followed by a comprehensive outline of the development history of the medium Machinima. The different pre-stages will be described with the help of relevant examples, which were important for the evolution of Machinima.
The development techniques of Machinima are the central topic of the second part of this thesis. Their respective features and their limitations will be specified by showing corresponding examples to each technique.
The third main topic of this thesis addresses the different Machinima genres. With the help of a comparison to television genres, the similarities as well as the differences will be shown. Additionally, an example for each genre will be given.
In conclusion, this thesis will point out the advantages of Machinima compared to traditional television productions, as well as future fields of application of this young medium.
The discussion in matters of possible legal issues in connection with the use and the granting of computer games licences for creating Machinima was deliberately excluded, as this does not regard the main topic of this thesis.
