Abstract (deu)

Bei der vorliegenden Masterarbeit zum Thema“ FGM in Wien: nationale Institutionen im Kampf gegen die lokale Praktik“, wird weibliche Genitalverstümmelung (Female Genital Mutilation, kurz FGM): ein destruktiver Eingriff, bei dem die weiblichen Geschlechtsteile teilweise oder ganz entfernt oder verletzt werden, als zentrales Thema behandelt. Durch transnationale Migrationen ist FGM nicht länger eine lokale afrikanische Angelegenheit, internationale und interkontinentale Bewegungen, Flüchtlingsströme und Asylbewerber verbreiten die Praktik weltweit. Es entstehen Netzwerke von weltumfassenden Organisationen, die das Thema FGM auf internationaler und globaler Ebene aufarbeiten. Auch in Österreich, besonders in Wien, existieren diverse Institutionen, die sich im Kampf gegen FGM engagieren. Anhand von sechs problemzentrierten, ethnographischen Interviews soll erforscht werden, wie die verschiedenen Wiener Institutionen, gegen eine traditionell eingebettete und lokale Praktik, außerhalb von ihrem einstigen Durchführungsort, vorgehen. Durch das Vergleichen der verschiedenen Organisationen soll das Netzwerk an Interventionen, in Wien, sowie die Anwendung der Gesetze und der kultursensible Vorgang verstanden und ausgearbeitet werden. Die Resultate der durchgeführten Interviews, werden mittels einer fallübergreifenden Darstellung mit theoretischen Perspektiven des Feminismus, der Globalisierung und des Abarbeitungsdiskurs zusammengeführt.

The Master thesis entitled “FGM in Vienna: national Institutions campaigning against a local practice “explores Female genital mutilation (FGM): “all procedures that involve the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” (WHO 2014) in a globalized context. Because of transnational migrations FGM is no longer a local African concern; international and intercontinental movement, refugee streams, and asylum seekers are spreading the practice all over the globe. This results in the development of a worldwide network of organizations, treating the issue on an international and global level. Austria is no exception to this, especially in Vienna there exist diverse institutions, getting involved with the fight against this harmful practice. The objective of the study is to find out how these institutions interfere against a local practice dislocated from their ancient place of execution. By the means of six ethnographic interviews, the network of interventions in Vienna, the application of law, and the sensitive dealing with cultural norms, should be understood and elaborated. The results of the conducted interviews are being compared and brought together with the theoretical perspectives of globalization, feminism and the eradication discourse.
