Abstract (eng)
In the center of this work is the comparison of books and e-readers/e-books in regard to changes of a media and recipient behaviour. In recent years, the book market has rapidly changed by the introduction of e-readers and e-books. It is essential to analyse this ongoing process of change at the interface between actors of the book market and readers, where both media are trying to find their place. The research is guided by the theory of Wilfried Lerg, which makes a distinction between media and recipient behaviour. Media behaviour describes the two process phenomena supplementation and complementation, the recipient behaviour describes substitution and compensation. Media behaviour refers to the media performance: Is there a new improved version of an old medium or another new medium on the market? Recipient behaviour refers to the media use: Are recipients distributing their attention time new, or are they devoting their attention time completely to the new media? Based on this theory, this report is investigating the question, which qualities each medium has on the results of theoretical and empirical research. Are books displaced, replaced or complemented by e-readers? In order to gain empirical evidence as the most ideal method a guided interview was chosen. The transcribed interviews were analyzed by using the qualitative content analysis according to Philipp Mayring. Two target audiences have been formed. The first target audienc,e digital natives, consisted of five persons aged 14-19 years, the second target audience of digital immigrants belongs to the age-set 60 +. The main requirement for both groups was to be in possession of an e-reader. (Investigation period: March to September 2014) Among other things, the results show that there is a partial change in both areas. On one hand, in media performance, the print edition paperback is being replaced by e-readers and e-books, on the other hand, in certain reading situations, caused by a change of place, such as Holiday, readers resort to e-readers, because of its handy lightweight format and the availability to carry a variety of works. Especially in new reading situations, like interims, in which the book is perceived as impractical due to its qualities, readers resort to e-readers.
