Abstract (eng)
The translation of medical texts has a very long tradition. However, this master thesis deals with the present: Today’s medical language, medical texts and modern medical translation are part of theoretical and practical examinations. The language pair English – German and the current situation in Austria are the centre of research. A questionnaire among translators working in Austria reveals information about the local market situation and professional reality. Moreover, focus will be given to: concepts of understanding, quality management and work-related tools. A comparison of perspectives of a linguistically talented medical doctor and a high-profile medical translator makes this work complete. An attempt has been made to find an answer to the question, who would be the better medical translator – the health professional with an excellent command of at least two languages or the educated translator, who has specialised in the medical field.
