Abstract (eng)
Based on various studies which consider the impact of Social Online Networks (SN) on their users’ social capital, this study focuses on two aspects by conducting an online survey (N = 325): (1) The adoption of and the usage of Social Network Sites through exchange students during their study stay abroad. (2) The impact of the usage of SN on the maintenance of existing relationships as well as the formation of new relationships during the study stay abroad. This empirical link has recently attracted the interest of various studies, as SN enable the formation, the maintenance and the extension of social relationships above geographical and social borders (Wellman et al., 2006). Exchange students that enter a new social environment through their study exchange can potentially benefit from that considerably. This is broadly confirmed by the empirical results: There is a strong association between the use of Facebook and the two types of social capital, namely both weak social relationships (“bridging”) and strong social relationships (“bonding social capital”). The positive association between the maintenance of social relationship and the usage of Facebook, however, could not be clearly confirmed in this study. Additionally, the study was able to contribute to the current debate in the literature by identifying a causal effect of various dimensions of Facebook usage on the level of its users’ social capital.
