Abstract (eng)
This master thesis deals with the peacekeeping missions of the United Nations in Somalia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In both cases the United Nations had the task to settle a domestic conflict. Having experiences with inter-state conflicts, at the beginning of 1990 the United Nations was facing new challenges. In this regard, this work analyzes the actions undertaken by the United Nations. The focus lies on the use of the available resources that are accorded under the UN-Charter within the framework of a peacekeeping mission. In addition, the collaboration between the Member States, the cooperation with the conflicting parties, as well as the cooperation with other international organizations are being examined. This work illustrates the problems encountered and the mistakes committed by the United Nations during the missions in Somalia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
