Abstract (eng)
The Nazi era and its reworking is still very relevant. Spiegelman managed with Maus, to show that the medium of comics is suitable for dealing with historical contexts.
This thesis deals with the reworking of the Holocaust in Spiegelman's Maus and its methods for representation of history.
At the beginning the thesis is about the suitability and the potential of the medium Comic for representing and processing historical events.
Furthermore, this thesis deals with the handling of time and history itself, about how history is written, with truth and untruth.
In addition, the presentation of the characters as mice is analysed. It's about why Spiegelman decided to draw his characters as animals rather than humans, and whether this concept works.
Furthermore it comes to the style in which Maus was written and drawn. It's about intermediality, which is caused by the use of photos, drawings, plans, maps and diaries.
In the end, this thesis deals with the reception of Maus, after the first publication.
