E-books become more and more important in times of digitization. The essential topic of this thesis is their market penetration, especially in the German-speaking area. To give the reader a basic understanding of the topic of this work, the principles of e-books, such as their definition, the definition and technical bases of e-book-reader, the available e-book-formats and new aspects that appear in the context of reading digital books, are explained first. The following chapter describes the market penetration of e-books in the USA, because the North American market is a pioneer in the area of e-books and e-book-reader. The essential topics in this chapter are sales trends and the company Amazon. After that the market penetration of e-books in Europe, particularly in the German-speaking area, is treated. This includes an analysis of the e-book-market in Germany and Austria. In conclusion there is a summary and a result.
