Abstract (eng)
The present study investigated the sports coverage of professional female tennisplayers in the print media in 2013.
The study analyses how the coverage of the individual print media differs depending on the gender. On the basis of a category system, and with the help of a quantitative-content-analysis is found out, whether there is a medial under-representation of female tennis players in the print media. Furthermore, strategies of media to the gender differentiated representation are uncovered.
For the study the print media Kronen Zeitung, Kurier, Die Presse, Sport Woche und Tennis Magazin were used. A census of all articles held for the dates of the four Grand Slam tournaments. In addition, all images were encoded to show the differences in the pictorial representation between the sexes.
With the help of the program SPSS, a multiple factorial analysis of variance and χ2 independence tests were used for the evaluation of the data material.
The text analysis examined both the quality and the amount of coverage. The represented situation in the imagery was in the center of attention at the image analysis.
The analysis showed that the print media still prefers male tennis players. The sex seems to be often more crucial than the success. The text analysis shows clear differences in the type of attribution and the evaluation of successes and failures. The result of the evaluation of the images shows that female tennis players are shown much more frequently in non-sporting situations or in erotic poses than male tennis players.
