Abstract (eng)
RESEARCH QUESTION:
Looking back at the consumption of media as an adolescent, to what extent was the content perceived and implemented as a potential identity?
The master’s thesis at hand, was written with the intention of presenting the perception of young adults about the relevance of media socialization in forming ones identity as an adolescent. To do so, media biographies of young adults between the ages of 24 and 26 were created and used as the data basis for generating a theory and answering the research question. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part.
The introductory chapter focuses on the connection between media and identity as well as on the scientific basis of media biography research, the methodology of narrative interviews and the Grounded Theory. The core of the master’s thesis is made up of the three narrative interviews and their analysis and interpretation using the Grounded Theory. The following thesis was created through discussion, presentation of the phenomena and the development of hypotheses:
Not media content, but the use of media itself makes up the fundamental component for the relevance of media socializing adolescents and is also perceived this way.
Ultimately, this master’s thesis tries to generate a scientific contribution to the topic of media and identity and to further strengthen the method of media biography research in communication studies.
