Abstract (eng)
The following thesis discusses the successes and achievements of Austrian and Swiss athletes in the Olympic Summergames between 1948 and 2012. Thereby the track record of these two central European states are compared and analyzed in an international context.
For a comprehensive comparison of Austria and Switzerland, the sport-structure and culture are presented and contrasted. Furthermore, a review of the sportive history of both countries is given and the effects on athletic achievements described. In order to allow for a detailed analysis, not only the medals won, but also all top 8 rankings in the respective games will be discussed. The award of ranking-points for placesin a so-called 'final' enables an exacter performance analysis, than would be possibleby merely drawing on media-analysis. It will be shown that Swiss athletes have achieved far better results in nearly all areas over the past 70 years than Austrian athletes and provide reasons for why this may be the case. To conclude it will be analyzed how this situation may be improved.
