Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Fangemeinde von Jane Austen, mit besonderem Fokus auf ‚Fanfictions‘, das bedeutet, von Fans verfasste Geschichten die auf den Romanen der englischen Schriftstellerin basieren. Einige dieser Geschichten erfreuten sich so großer Beliebtheit, dass sie sogar in Buchform veröffentlicht wurden. Es wird untersucht, warum Jane Austen, fast 200 Jahre nach ihrem Tod, immer noch so große Begeisterung bei den Lesern hervorruft. Vor allem der Roman Stolz und Vorurteil wird oft als Vorlage für Fanfictions verwendet. Die Charakterentwicklung der weiblichen Hauptfigur, Elizabeth Bennet, wird klar und nachvollziehbar beschrieben, was jedoch nicht auf die männliche Hauptfigur, Mr. Darcy, zutrifft. Viele Fans versuchten daraufhin, ihre eigenen Interpretationen dafür zu finden. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden die Werke der amerikanischen Schriftstellerin Pamela Aidan, eine der erfolgreichsten Autorinnen von Jane Austen Fanfictions, analysiert und mit Austens Original verglichen. In Aidans Romantrilogie Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman wird Stolz und Vorurteil aus der Perspektive des Mr. Darcy nacherzählt und es wird somit versucht, eine Antwort auf die von Austen offen gelassene Frage zu finden. In der Novelle Young Master Darcy, die eine wichtige Episode aus Mr. Darcys Kindheit beschreibt, baut Aidan seinen Charakter noch weiter aus. Aidan gelingt es zwar nicht, Austens Ironie nachzuahmen, dafür bietet sie uns jedoch eine glaubwürdige Interpretation für Mr. Darcys Charakterentwicklung.

This thesis analyses the Jane Austen Fandom, with an emphasis on ‘Fanfictions‘, that is, stories written by fans that are based on the novels by the English writer. The fans published their stories either on fanfiction internet forums, while other stories became so successful among readers that they were even published in book form. Although Jane Austen died almost 200 years ago, fans cannot seem to get enough of her novels and characters, and some possible reasons for this phenomenon will be discussed. The Jane Austen novel that is most often taken as a basis for fanfiction is Pride and Prejudice, which is due to the character of Mr. Darcy, whose arrogance and conceit is turned into helpfulness and courtesy in the course of the novel. The narrator does not give us reasons for this change, so numerous fans tried to find their own interpretation for this mystery. One of them is Pamela Aidan, whose Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy retells Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of Mr. Darcy. In the novella Young Master Darcy, Aidan describes a significant part of Mr. Darcy’s childhood, thus, his character is further elaborated. Aidan’s works will be analyzed and compared to Austen’s original. While Aidan does not succeed in imitating Austen’s wit and irony, she offers us a credible interpretation for Mr. Darcy’s change.
