Abstract (eng)
This diploma thesis gives an insight into the children’s rights situation of girls and boys around the world. The question is raised to what extent the lives of children have changed since the UN Human Rights Charter of 1948. After a brief historical overview which describes the situation of children in different eras more information on the historical development of children’s rights is given. Moreover, various important declarations are covered, namely, the Geneva Declaration of 1924, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN Human Rights) of 1948 and the Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1959. In addition, the International Year of the Child (1979) is described. Furthermore, this thesis focuses on The Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) which is the most important milestone for children’s rights. For the first time in history, political, cultural, economic and social rights of children were brought together in a legally binding contract. Since then the protection of children no longer depended solely on compassion or morality, but were written down and signed by various states. Thus, it was and still is the responsibility of the included states to do everything in order to create decent living conditions for children. No other international convention has received as much support as the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
