Abstract (eng)
This master thesis titled „The conception of masculinities in American Football” comprises issues of hegemonic masculinity, performativity, fandom, globalization, Euro-American societies, physicality and morality. The focus lies on fans of American Football in Austria and the normative ideas of masculinities within this context. Why most men and women agree with these prevailing ideas of masculinity is significant. How American Football conceptualizes moral standards is evaluated as well as the question of what kind of desire American Football fulfils. This shows the desire for basic human needs, for example, acceptance.
The relevance of this topic for Social and Cultural Anthropology is to show that globalization transforms not just cultural practices, but also moral values and concepts. This makes American Football, as social space, influential on
gender constructions. What kind of masculinities American Football fans develop and how these concepts of masculinities are lived not just within the fan culture, but also
beyond, are the focus of this scientific paper.
