Abstract (eng)
The ambition of this thesis was to investigate subjective feelings of stress on the part of sports instructors with special consideration of certain personality traits and stress factors in order to make the development conditions of burnout more comprehensible in the sports teaching profession. In doing so, the influence of self-assessed physical fitness of sports instructors has also been taken into account. It was assumed that perfectionistic-thinking and acting as well as negative self-assessments - also with regard to personal athleticism - encourage burnout.
In order to answer the research hypotheses, an empirical study was conducted by means of online questionnaires, which compiled the sample of 159 sports instructors mainly from Northern and Eastern Austria who were guided to assess various professional and private situations using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The variables, which were handled as independent, are composed of self-concept clarity, physical self-concept, athletic identity, self-esteem and perfectionism.
Overall, the results of this study draw the conclusion that there is both a high level of professionalism and a lower level of stress among the sports instructors. Teachers with a clear image of themselves are less vulnerable to treating their pupils impersonally. Furthermore, correlations between self-esteem and perfectionism with burnout have been confirmed. Contrary to previous expectations, body-oriented personality traits, had hardly any significant connections with burnout.
However, moderating effects on burnout of physical self-concept and athletic identity could be determined, as both characteristics that affect the physical stress of sports instructors. Furthermore, unfavorable relationships between teaching stressors and burnout have been shown in this thesis Significant relations can also be reported between burnout and the ability of emotional detachment, offensive problem management, life satisfaction and the tendency to resign due to disappointments can also be reported.
