Abstract (eng)
The following paper discusses the type and scope of mathematics, in the course of school and professional education to employment. It gives an overview of the role of mathematics in school and profession and illustrates how mathematical competencies can be measured in general or professional education and profession. The main part of the paper comprises a survey of employees in Austria. By means of an online questionaire, data on a variety of topics were aquired. These include education, occupation, the frequency of occurrence of mathematics in the job, the use of different mathematical fields in the job, mathematics in the early school years, and the difference between mathematics at school and at work.
