Abstract (eng)
Latest research findings showe that peripheral regions have indeed innovative potential. This diploma thesis aims to examine this innovative potential in the region of Waldviertel.
The research question reads as follows:
How do firms in regions less conducive to innovation, like the Waldviertel, accomplish to be innovative and successful?
To answer this question, initially a profound literature research and afterwards four expert interviews were conducted.
By means of an empirical analysis it has been shown that both of the examined firms, Sonnentor and Test-Fuchs, have to cope with some innovation barriers like the lack of academic staff, the poorly developed infrastructure and the lack of regional partners. However, these barriers can be overcome with an efficient internal organisation structure. For this purpose the firms pursue two main strategies. Firstly, they try to pool as many competences as possible within the company and secondly the firms outsource jobs which are difficult to staff in the Waldviertel to core regions.
