Abstract (eng)
This thesis deals with math anxiety and the correlation between math-performance in
school, math self-concept and the gender differences. Therefore, a study with 120 students
was carried out in two middle schools in Upper Austria. The investigation consisted of
different questionnaires and six math calculations. It was investigated how the above factors
are related. The study also included the interest and usefulness of mathematics.
Furthermore, the self- and external assessment regarding the students´ mathematical tasks
were also inquired and analyzed. Due to the analyzation a strong negative correlation
between math anxiety and the achievement in math, math self-concept, interest and
usefulness in mathematic could be determined. Furthermore, gender-specific differences
could be noticed. For the same performance, girls show more math anxiety than boys. In
addition, the perceived usefulness of mathematics from girls decreases not only when they
have a higher math anxiety, but also when they conform a gender stereotypical thinking
regarding mathematics.
