Mit dem Streamen von Opernvorstellungen hält die voranschreitende Digitalisierung auch Einzug in ein altes, als konservativ geltendes Medium. Obwohl die Vermutung, dass somit ein neues, junges, „digital native“ Publikum angesprochen wird, nahe liegt, ist dies nicht der Fall. Obwohl eine Übertragung mit sehr vielen Kompromissen behaftet ist, genießt sie jedenfalls ein hohes Ansehen unter ihren NutzerInnen.

Even though it might be presumed that as a consequence it addresses a young, „digital native“ audience, this, in fact, is not the case. On the contrary: online streaming of operas is mainly used by an older audience of high formal education who regularly attend opera performances anyway. For this reason, it is rather seen as complementary to the traditional way of consuming opera performances. For the opera houses themselves, a significant reason for the online streaming of operas is the thereby signalizing of a willingness to adapt to more contemporary ways of media consumption in order to not be displaced by other facilities for entertainment. While streaming is associated with various compromises, it is still held in high esteem among its users.
