Abstract (eng)
In recent years, communication research has produced numerous studies on international news coverage. However, comparatively little is known about Chinese print media’s performance. The present study evaluates the depiction of Sino-German relations in Chinese news. A total of 400 articles, which were published between 2007 and 2016 by China’s official press agency Xinhua General News Service, were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis to detect the underlying media frames. Findings are not in support of past research, which emphasized the negative alignment of international news coverage. Specifically, Chinese news does not reflect a conflict orientation towards Germany or Sino-German relations. Potential explanations are discussed in relation to the differences between the Chinese and German media systems and implications for future research are highlighted. This study provides insight into the specific role of news media coverage in shaping current geo-political and geo-economic transformations, with regard to Sino-German relations.
