Abstract (eng)
This master´s thesis aims to explore the correlations between; Media literacy, social background and media usage habits in children between the ages of 13 and 16, still in compulsory schooling.
The term `Media Literacy´will be explored in great detail, with regards to its origins and the evolution of the term. This thesis will also delve into the research carried out in this field, by previous theorists and authors.
Furthermore, this thesis will concentrate on the factors that contribute to ensuring a good understanding and level of media literacy.
Another avenue of exploration, is the importance of the Austrian educational system and its injustices. The thesis shall go into detail on the impact of social demographics in relation to the factors that affect the gaining of competencies.
In addition to the above, this thesis aims to summarise the work carried out in this field, in the German speaking world.
In order to achieve the findings for this work, a computer based survey, was carried out by students in the target group, in different schooling institutions (AHS and NMS). The survey was based on the media literacy model, developed by Dieter Baacke.
