Wie der Name des Genres bereits andeutet, besteht dystopische Literatur für junge Erwachsene scheinbar aus einer Kombination zwischen den Genres der Literatur für junge Erwachsene und der dystopischen Literatur. Die Verwendung eines Ansatzes, der auf der Prototyp Theorie basiert, und die dementsprechende Identifizierung typischer Attribute des Genres zeigen, dass in der dystopischen Literatur für junge Erwachsene Attribute vorkommen, die typisch für dystopische Literatur sind, und Attribute, die typischerweise in der Literatur für junge Erwachsene vorkommen. Weiters beeinflussen sich die Genres der Literatur für junge Erwachsene und der dystopischen Literatur innerhalb einiger Attribute der dystopischen Literatur für junge Erwachsene gegenseitig. Die Analyse zweier Werke aus dem Genre der dystopischen Literatur für junge Erwachsene basierend auf diesem Ansatz zeigt, dass die Trilogie Die Auslese (2013-2014) von Joelle Charbonneau ein prototypisches Beispiel aus dem Genre ist und dass die Tetralogie Hüter der Erinnerung (1993-2012) von Lois Lowry aus Novellen besteht, die sekundäre und periphere Beispiele sind. Anhand dieser Masterarbeit lässt sich erkennen, dass man durch die Anwendung der Prototyp Theorie auf das Genre der dystopischen Literatur für junge Erwachsene interessante Erkenntnisse über das Genre erlangen kann.

As its name suggests, the genre of young adult dystopian fiction is seemingly made up of a combination of the two genres of young adult and dystopian fiction. Approaching the genre from a perspective of prototype theory and accordingly identifying attributes that typically occur in the genre show that some of the attributes are observable in the genre, because they are typical attributes of dystopian fiction, and some of them occur, because they are typical attributes of young adult fiction. Moreover, young adult and dystopian fiction seem to influence each other within some of the attributes of young adult dystopian fiction. Applying this approach to two examples of young adult dystopian fiction leads to the conclusion that The Testing Trilogy (2013-2014) by Joelle Charbonneau is a prototypical example of the genre and that The Giver Quartet (1993-2012) by Lois Lowry consists of novels that are secondary and peripheral examples of the genre. This thesis shows that applying prototype theory to young adult dystopian fiction can lead to many interesting insights into the genre.
