Die Diplomarbeit knüpft an eine Diskussion in der GCC/GVC/GPN-Literatur an, nach der kollektive Handlungen von Arbeiter/innen für Soziales Upgrading notwendig sind. Anhand des Kakaosektors in Ghana geht die Diplomarbeit der Frage nach, welche Rolle Gewerkschaften und Kooperativen/Associations in kleinbäuerlich dominierten Güterketten für Soziale Upgradingprozesse spielen. Basierend auf 17 Interviews von Gewerkschafts-/Kooperativen-/Associationmitgliedern wird erklärt, wo welche Gewerkschaften/Kooperativen/Associations in Ghana´s Kakao-Schokolade-Produktionsnetzwerk involviert sind. Weiters wird zusammengefasst dargestellt, wie Gewerkschaften/Kooperativen/Associations Soziale Upgradingprozesse begründen und wo ihre Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Verbesserung von Arbeitsbedingungen liegen. Die Diplomarbeit schlussfolgert, dass Gewerkschaften eine zentrale Rolle für Soziale Upgradingprozesse von lohnabhängigen Arbeiter/innen in regulären Arbeitsverhältnissen spielen, während für Kleinbauern/bäuerinnen der Staat bzw. die staatliche Regulierung wichtiger ist als Gewerkschaften/Kooperativen/Associations. Jedoch sind die jeweiligen Handlungsspielräume durch GPN-Dynamiken begrenzt.

This diploma thesis draws on a discussion in the GCC/GVC/GPN-literature which argues that collective agency of workers is necessary to achieve social upgrading. Using the cocoa sector in Ghana as a case study, the thesis asks which role trade unions and farmer cooperatives/asso-ciations play for social upgrading processes in smallholder dominated value chains. Based on mainly 17 interviews of trade union/cooperative/association members, the thesis explores where trade unions/cooperatives/associations are involved in the Ghanaian cocoa-chocolate-production-network. Furthermore, it presents their perspective on social upgrading drivers and their possibilities to act in terms of improving working conditions. The thesis concludes that trade unions play an important role for social upgrading processes for regular wage-dependent workers, while for smallholder farmers the state (regulation) is much more important than trade unions/cooperatives/associations. But their possibilities to act are constrained by GPN-dynamics.
