In der frühen Neuzeit entwickelten die Europäer eine Passion für Reiseliteratur, die im 18. Jahrhundert ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Infolgedessen erlangte eine Publikationsreihe des bayerischen Jesuiten Joseph Stöcklein in deutscher Sprache eine gewisse Popularität: Der Neue Welt-Bott. Er wurde von 1728 bis 1761 veröffentlicht und bietet mit hunderten schriftlichen Briefen von Jesuitenmissionaren aus jedem Weltwinkel neben Abenteuern einen kolossalen Wissensschatz an. Es war nicht nur eine reichhaltige Lektüre, sondern diente auch als Manifestation der globalen Rolle des Jesuitenordens als Vermittler zwischen Nationen und Kulturen. Anhand der Briefe aus den 1730er-Jahren wird den Forschungsfragen folgend die Darstellung von Populationen in China und Südamerika rekonstruiert und miteinander und mit dem allgemeinen Diskurs in Europa verglichen.

In the early modern age, the known world began to grow in overwhelming spheres. The given possibilities at that time for travelling and communicating made the world a vast place to live in. As a result, the Europeans developed a great desire for travel literature, which peaked in the 18th century, and one publication series from the Bavarian Jesuit Joseph Stöcklein rose to a certain popularity: Der Neue Welt-Bott. Published from 1728 to 1761, it offers hundreds of written letters from Jesuit missionaries and holds a colossal treasure of knowledge about foreign cultures, biological descriptions, missionary activities of the Jesuits and many other things. Not only is it an abundant reading bursting with knowledge, but also did it serve as a manifestation of the global role of the Jesuit Order as an intermediary between nations and cultures.
In this work, letters from the 1730s taken from Der Neue Welt-Bott will be brought to attention. Letters from South America and the Chinese empire will be explored. The first goal is to reconstruct the depictions about the South Americans as well as the Chinese population. The second goal is the comparison between these images. The third goal is a discourse analysis of texts, which have been written from the 16th century on, in order to explore, if these texts contain similar images to those created in the letters.
