Abstract (eng)
The current study explores a possible relationship between different aspects of sexuality and happiness. Previous studies found a positive association between sexual frequency and happiness. Specifically, studies showed that a sexual frequency, that doesn’t exceed one time per week, leads to an increase in happiness. Furthermore, aspects of relationship satisfaction, as well as sexual satisfaction were positively associated with happiness. Additionally, a positive influence of self-esteem on happiness and sexual satisfaction could be found. Based on these previous findings, the current study explored four hypotheses, which included variables of sexual frequency, relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and self-esteem. The study was conducted using an online survey, which included measures of satisfaction with life, different aspects of sexuality, relationships and self-esteem. The results showed a positive association between relationship satisfaction and happiness. Furthermore, an indirect positive relationship between sexual frequency and happiness, which was mediated through sexual satisfaction, could be determined. An influence of self-esteem on happiness could only be postulated, if self-esteem was included solely as a control variable. Contrary to previous findings, no positive relationship between sexual frequency and happiness was found. This could be due to the influence of adaption and habituation, which results in people quickly adapting to positive affect. A topic for future studies would be controlling sexual frequency, so it doesn’t exceed once a week, to further investigate the relationship with happiness, especially in regard of relationship and sexual satisfaction.
