Abstract (eng)
This diploma thesis deals with the formalisation of homework in the 20th century in Austria, with a focus on the region of Vorarlberg and its relation to Eastern Switzerland. Homework has a long history in Vorarlberg. In order to illustrate the long path to the first legislation and to take into account the extent to which the traditional form of gainful employment in the home has spread, the beginnings and developments of homework between 1750 and 1900 are also described in this thesis. As early as the 18th century, orders from Swiss companies were outsourced to homeworkers in Vorarlberg in the putting-out system. Also in the 20th century Vorarlberg was a major homeworking region. Since the early beginnings, homework was mainly assigned in the textile industry and especially in embroidery. This diploma thesis focuses on the question to what extent the formalisation process changed the homework sec-tor and affected the individual homeworkers.
