Abstract (eng)
Background and Aim: Person-centred care in nursing leads to more holism, mutual appreciation, sustainability, and a feeling of well-being. Although, there are some educational programs for trained nurses to increase their person-centeredness in practice. Less of these programs address the particular needs and requirements of student nurses. The aim of this study was, on the one hand, to examine how student nurses recognise that they care in a person-centred way. Therefore, lectors in nursing, nursing instructors, and the students itself were questioned. On the other hand, based on these findings, specific characteristics of student nurses ́ competence in person-centredness were deduced. Moreover, learning outcomes were identified. Hence, more transparency during the acquisition of person-centred care competence of student nurses is ensured. Method: In the course of this qualitative-descriptive study, focus-group interviews with lectors in nursing, nursing instructors, and the student nurses in Austria were conducted. In sum, 35 persons in six focus-groups have participated. Subsequently, the compiled data were analysed through the summarising content analysis. Results: Six specific characteristics may be distinguished in connection with a person-centred competence of student nurses. These are an awareness of self-efficiency, an interpersonal attentiveness, an understanding of boundaries, the living of professional relationships in nursing, having an attitude, and the implementation of reflexive nursing interventions. Furthermore, nine learning outcomes can be deduced of these specific characteristics. Conclusion: The findings of this study may be seen as a contribution to the international discussion in terms of person-centred curricula development in nursing. Furthermore, the findings should be implemented in nowadays educational programmes in nursing. Besides, lectures and nursing instructors should receive a special training. In doing so, the acquisition of a person-centred competence in student nurses gets promoted.
