In dieser Studie werden drei verschiedene Darstellungen des ersten Premierministers der Republik Kongo, Patrice Lumumba, nach sei-ner Ermordung untersucht. Genauer gesagt, untersucht diese Studie die Figur des Lumumba in drei verschiedenen Theaterstücken - "Une Saison au Congo" von Aime Cesaire, "War Drums on the Equator" von Li Huang et al.'s und "Funnyhouse of a Negro" von Adrienne Kennedy - und die jeweiligen "spatial formats", in die sie im Einklang oder im Gegensatz zu Projekten des Kalten Krieges eingebettet sind. Das Hauptziel dieser Studie besteht darin, die bi-polare Sichtweise der Kongokrise und das daraus resultierende re-duktionistische Verständnis der antiimperialistischen Bewegungen, die nach der Ermordung Lumumbas entstanden, als rein antiwest-lich zu hinterfragen. Die Analyse dieser Studie hat also gezeigt, dass die globalen Reaktionen auf Lumumbas Märtyrertod und die ent-sprechenden Neuinszenierungen antiimperialistischer Weltan-schauungen in den verschiedenen Stücken nie ein einheitliches und singuläres Phänomen waren. Indem die Studie untersucht, wie die Figur Lumumbas in den drei Stücken in unterschiedliche "spatial formats" eingebettet wurde, erfasst sie die multipolare Konstellati-on konkurrierender Visionen und Ansprüche auf bestimmte Welt-anschauungen im Zuge der Dekolonisierung während des Kalten Krieges, von denen die eurozentrische nur ein Teil ist. Nur durch eine solche Konzeptualisierung der Dekolonisierungsbewegungen in der Ära des Kalten Krieges lassen sich die dekonstruktiven Ver-suche der vielfältigen Projekte des Kalten Krieges identifizieren und verorten, was eine Erklärung dafür bietet, warum und wie die Figur Lumumbas überhaupt von widersprüchlichen Bewegungen in verschiedenen Projekten aufgegriffen wurde.

This study examines three different representations of the first Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba, in the aftermath of his assassination. More specifically, this study lo-cated the figure of Lumumba in three different plays of Aime Cesaire’s “Une Saison au Congo”, Li Huang et al.’s “War Drums on the Equator”, and Adrienne Kennedy’s “Funnyhouse of a Negro” and the respective “spatial formats” in which they are embedded in line or contrast with Cold War projects. The main aim of this study is to challenge the bipolar vision of the Congo crisis, and the con-sequent reductionist understanding of the anti-imperialist move-ments which emerged after the assassination of Lumumba as purely anti-Western. What the analysis of this study has demonstrated then, is that the global responses to Lumumba’s martyrdom and the according restagings of anti-imperialist world views in the different plays were never a unified and singular phenomenon. By examining how the figure of Lumumba was embedded in different “spatial formats” in the three plays, this study captured the multipo-lar constellation of competing visions and claims to certain world views in the wake of decolonisation during the Cold War, of which the Eurocentric one is only a part of it. Only through such concep-tualisation of the decolonisation movements in the Cold War era can one identify and locate the deconstructive attempts of the mul-tiple Cold War projects, which offers an explanation to why and how the figure of Lumumba has been taken up by contradictory movements in different projects in the first place.
