Abstract (eng)
The aim of this master's thesis is to determine the forms of international aid during the North Korean famine from 1994 to 1998, to find liberal and conservative opinions on this in the South Korean newspapers Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh, and to show differences in reporting. Using Philipp Mayring’s Qualitative Content Analysis, no clear distinction of content could be assigned to a political orientation in the 69 analysed newspaper articles. More articles appeared in the Chosun Ilbo until February of 1997 than in the Hankyoreh, which did not publish more articles about the famine and international aid until March of 1997. The mentioned relief efforts were largely thematically the same. The Chosun Ilbo reported more on U.S. aid than the Hankyoreh; the Hankyoreh, in turn, reported more on North Korean political factors and difficulties the North Korean Regime was facing.
