Abstract (eng)
Through the Black Lifes Matter movement, the monuments of various personalities were torn down in the USA. These circumstances also led to the confrontation with monuments of controversial personalities in Austria too. The movement´s achievements have been adapted to today's findings of historical research. Various actors pursue their interests in the transformation and preservation of these monuments. The Dr. Karl Lueger monument in Vienna is such a controversial monument. The monument was scene of several political disputes. First, the career of Karl Lueger is presented, and his rhetoric analysed. Based on newspaper articles, the discourse around the monument is analysed and illustrated before a didactic analysis is carried out. This is followed by lesson planning and possible implementation in class. The "Working Group for the Redesign of the Lueger Monument" developed drafts for the redesign of this monument in order to call it a "memorial" in the future. The new forms of communication in social media enable new approaches for the subject of history, social studies and political education. The culture of remembrance is supported by students strongly influenced by their media consumption. The focus is thrown on linking the culture of remembrance with the institution of school. The students should develop a modern and reflected view of history on the basis of the discourse on a possible redesign of the Dr. Karl Lueger monument and they are encouraged to actively shape society. Finally, the results of the teaching unit are presented, discussed and reflected.
